On deformation characterisation of machined surfaces and machining-induced white layers in a milled titanium alloy

Machining-induced white layers and severely deformed are undesirable surface integrity features which can be formed when machining high-strength aerospace alloys. An orthogonal milling process has been designed performed to assess the impact of cutting speeds, tool wear, edge radius climb vs conventional on layer formation plastic strain distribution. The deformation in machined associated with Ti-6Al-4V quantified using micro-grids different length scales printed electron beam lithography technique. It was found that via severe mechanism, at equivalent values excess 1.2 regions arc instantaneous chip thickness less than cutting-edge ploughing rubbing being dominant mechanisms. results indicated magnitude measured strains depth plastically material greater lower during a larger flank wear land.
